For more than 25 years, Sangre de Cristo Hospice & Palliative Care has been caring for friends and neighbors in
Southeastern Colorado communities.  Our philosophy has always been that it is not just the patient who needs
compassionate care, but each member of the family.
Now, through the generosity of the Banfield Charitable Trust’s national Pet Peace of Mind program, Sangre de
Cristo Hospice is able to extend this philosophy of care to even the non-human members of the family.  We know
that the unconditional love pets provide to their owners is priceless medicine for both patients and families living
with terminal illness.
Pet Peace of Mind is designed to help provide whatever services are necessary to keep patient and pet together
throughout the end-of-life journey.  Just as in our care for people, we empower patients to make their own
healthcare decisions for their pets and then help them to carry out those decisions.  Our specially trained
volunteers are the helping hands to care for the pet, so that the patient and family need only enjoy the pet.

How can Pet Peace of Mind
assist with pets of hospice patients?

•        Pet food and cat litter
•        Exercise
•        Routine veterinary care
•        Transportation to veterinary appointments
•        Spaying and neutering
•        Pet boarding in case of patient hospitalization
•        Flea and tick treatment
•        Heartworm preventive
•        Pain and comfort medication for elderly pets
•        Transportation to grooming appointments
•        Trained volunteers for temporary foster care
•        Transportation to nursing facilities to visit owners
•        Assistance with finding a “forever home” if family is not able to keep pet after patient’s death

It’s the little things that often are neglected when a family is coping with a terminal illness.  The bills might not be
paid on time, or maybe family members are forced to choose which bills they can afford to pay because of high
medical costs.  The car might not get washed; the yard might not be mowed and the flowers might not get
watered.
Pet Peace of Mind ensures that the family’s animals are not among the responsibilities that are neglected.
Whether they are furry, feathered or finned, your pets will get the same kind of loving care you’ve always given
them with the help of Sangre de Cristo Hospice & Palliative Care’s specially trained volunteers.
If you are a hospice patient or caregiver and need some extra help caring for the animal members of your
household, please let your case manager, family services coordinator, volunteer coordinator or any of our staff
members know.  We will be happy to take it from there.  Sangre de Cristo Hospice - we’re there when you need
us most.
